So a good friend's 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. These folks are extremely devout. Attending church only two or three times a week would be an exception. Friend of course is devastated.
And Cow is left wondering why religions have so much difficulty with the concept of birth control. While the earth staggers under billions of humans, and every other species struggles to survive, religious groups keep trusting in the Lord to keep kids from breeding. Which doesn't seem to work.
Cow understands the idea that to religions, sex is bad, therefore, sex is punishable by forcing people to get married (maybe) and have the unplanned-for child (for sure). And that to religions, condoning birth control means condoning sex.
Cow just wishes that of all the issues in the world, the church could adopt another one.
Moo!

It's true that abstinence is the only sure method of preventing pregnancy (except for the Virgin Mary, but we'll just ignore that).
It's also true that teenagers are horny as hell, and all the praying and church going and clean lyrics of Christian rock bands aren't going to keep a lot of kids from mixing gravy. Condoms & birth control pills are insurance. Besides, don't the pills clear up acne? How can Jesus frown on a pimple-free face?
Better sex education would help as well, Ms Cow, I'm sure young Missy didn't want to have a baby. Following on from Chris V, I heard of a doctor who prescribed the pill purely to cure a young woman's acne. I believe she was celibate.
Sad, all around.
The need to focus on reality, and helping the needy, would seem obvious. But i guess not.
Well, not all of them do. Some are smarter than others. Real sex ed would help. Rather than a wagging finger and a threat of shame. Praying for the girl and her family. May it be the start of a wonderful adventure in her life.
Chris: Welcome! Thanks for your comments...agree with all you say.
Gorilla: Cow wishes there were more Gorilla babies to rock the Congo, and is sure gorillas never suffer the pain and social isolation of debilitating acne.
Meno: Yes, Cow thinks it's weird how religions will take such a strong stance on some things but let other, even more pressing problems, go unaddressed.
Watercolor: Cow thanks you for your optimism and hopes that you are right.

I watched a docutmentary last night about the issues with no rental properties available for people. They end up having to stay in temporary places and caravan parks.
What I could not help but notice is that all of them had loads of kids - like, four and five. THEN, two of the women got pregnant again. Sorry, but that is stupid.
Honestly, if I were poor and homeless, well, having a shag would be the LAST thing on my mind.
Cow can understand and forgive the "having a shag" part, it's the foisting children they can't afford onto the taxpayers to support is the part that makes her see red.
And agree, many hard-luck stories are for people who popped out more kids than they can afford.
Birth control is free for anyone who wants it at the clinics here. There really is no excuse.
Thank you for your comments, Linda!
