Movie Palaces

Cow wonders whether the old Movie Palaces, exotic temples as they were, made the content seem better.

Mall cinemas have no architectural oddities nor excesses. The audience is dressed down; there is no master of ceremonies...and going to the movies has become just another thing to do for a couple hours instead of a special experience.

Cow would like more "occasions" for which to don her Topiary finery. Especially since these spaces are air-conditioned.

Moo!

You can't do better than a proper picture palace.

I remember when going to see a play at the theater was a dress-up occasion too. I was shocked the first time I saw someone in T-shirt and shorts at a Broadway theater.

In Lexington KY we have a restored movie palace called The Kentucky. The show old movies there from time to time, in addition to art house and indie films.

Dear Topiary, well lovely old red velvet and gold-leaf cinemas are pleasant, but i always prefer the newer ones because of the stadium seating. I am so so sick of men with enormous heads sitting in front of me suddenly two seconds before the main feature starts. Love scones x

I would love to go do something that gives me a chance to dress up.

Any one want to plan a blogger event?

Sandi gets the prize. Yes, indeedy, tis the Orpheum. (Cow thinking there is an interesting story behind Sandi knowing this...)

Heather: (Cow packing picnic basket and big floppy hat) Cow is coming to The Kentucky! Cow's favorite things: old movies, indie and art house movies, and a big grand theater.

Scones: Next time a big-head sits in front of you Cow thinks you should spill some jam and cream on him.

Miss Mud: Cow not knowing any fancy moovie palaces around Jackson, Mississippi. Sigh.

Moo!

Sweet.

No great and wonderful story, though. I went to see "Grease" there when I was a teenager. The cast was fantastic, but I was just bowled over by the theater itself. It's gorgeous.

Why, my sentiments exactly!
I did a post not long ago on this very topic -- and recalled the old, vast, air-conditioned movie theatre on Kalakaua Avenue in Honolulu that had stars on the ceiling that glowed and giant palm trees. I saw "Earthquake" there, after skiving off from school (possibly with my mother).

I think it's been chopped up into five different theatres now. Little shoeboxes you sit in to watch a mediocre movie.

Cow, I was never so shocked as when my husband came back from the concession stand with a beer. They sell beer and wine there to add to your movie enjoyment.
However for all of the lovely settings(marble floors, gilt everything) they need to upgrade their sound system. It sucks!

Cow is stunned at her reader's familiarity with The Orpheum, and wonders how many other obscure topics they are hiding secret knowledge of?

(Cow quickly hiding her disquisition on Obscure Topics)
