Comfort versus Change

Cow is very comfortable where she is. A comfy chair, a comfy routine, a job like a comfy pair of house slippers: not going anywhere, but not pinching either.

That's the dilemma. Stay in these meadows, or decamp to others, perhaps more rewarding, but new. Unknown. Full of unseen perils or, possibly, great rewards.

Cow used to change jobs the way others changed aforesaid footwear. Has laziness crept in? Because now Cow mostly thinks about how much work it is learning a new job, a new bunch of co-workers, a new neighborhood.

Could, in fact, everything in the New Place be tickety-boo? Or could it be Dunderchunderville?

Moo!

What's your gut tell you about the new job?

It's always a risk. Sometimes it comes down to why you started looking for something new. Were you restless (which often is the first sign of full blown burnout), or was if someone else's suggestion or an unexpected opportunity? However it ends, you won't know if it's right until it does.

I suggest you take the job if you think it will make you a better person in any respect.

But if you MOOVE what will happen to your gorgeous black ferrel cat and your herd of raccoons?

Staying put is easy because of the inertia effect and there are a million and a half ways of rationalising it (even if it's entirely irrational to do anything except run like hell -- take the word of one who knows! My doctor's opening words are always: "are you still in that job?")

On the other hand, how green is the other grass really and what's the cost-benefit analysis of the transition?

End of the day, I'd agree with Sandi's suggestion that you follow your gut. With the additional suggestion that you run through a "what if it turns out to be a mistake?" scenario with yourself. What's the worst that can happen if it is a mistake? (Loss of life/limbs/loved ones? Inconvenience?) And if it is a mistake, what benefits may accrue anyway? (experience/money/consolation dates with the cute guy who runs the car pool)

Good luck whatever you decide!

Heather: Not to worry, raccoons will be fed by the neighbors (Cow has already made sure of that) and as for feral cat Felix:

Cow has been feeding him sneakily inside a large kennel for a while now. So when it is time to go Cow will shut the kennel door on Felix and take him to the vet for shots and a little snippity-snip.

Then Felix will travel in his kennel to whereever Cow is going.

Cow would never feed an animal and then leave it behind, that would be cruel and not of the standards expected of the Land of Topiary!

Thank you for your concern.

Kevin, thank you very much for your thoughts. These are all good points to consider and as you say, the inertia effect is very powerful.

Cow will be weighing options and compiling lists and such-like before she makes this big decision.
